Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

This Part describes the functions, features, protocol and
\nservices of the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) Mobile Data
\nLink Protocol (MDLP).<\/p>\n

MDLP is a protocol that operates within the Data Link Layer of
\nthe OSI architecture to provide logical link control services
\nbetween Mobile End Systems (M-ESs) and Mobile Data Intermediate
\nSystems (MD-ISs).<\/p>\n

MDLP utilizes the services of the CDPD Medium Access Control
\n(MAC) Layer to provide access to the physical channel and
\ntransparent transfer of link-layer frames between Data Link Layer
\nentities. The MAC layer is defined in Part 402.<\/p>\n

The term Data Link<\/i> Layer is used throughout this
\nspecification to refer to the MDLP protocol entity. It is
\nunderstood that this refers to the logical link control sublayer as
\nprovided by MDLP, as distinct from the MAC sublayer described in
\nPart 402.<\/p>\n

The terms user side or network side<\/i> are used in this
\nPart to refer to the M-ES or MD-IS endpoint of the data link,
\nrespectively.1<\/sup><\/p>\n

The definition of MDLP takes into consideration the concepts and
\nprinciples of the following:<\/p>\n

a. [CCITT-X.200] and [CCITT-X.210]\u2014the reference model and layer
\nservice conventions for OSI<\/p>\n

b. [ISO-7809]\u2014High-level Data Link Control (HDLC)\u2014Classes of
\nProcedures<\/p>\n

c. [ISO-4335]\u2014High-level Data Link Control (HDLC)\u2014Elements of
\nProcedures<\/p>\n

d. [ISO-8802-2]\u2014Logical link control<\/p>\n

e. [ISO-10039]\u2014MAC service definition<\/p>\n

f. [CCITT-Q.920] and [CCITT-Q.921]\u2014Link Access Procedure for the
\nD-channel (LAPD)<\/p>\n

g. [CCITT-V.42]\u2014Link Access Procedure for Modems (LAPM).<\/p>\n

The commands and responses of the peer protocol procedures
\ndefined in Section 6, page 403\u201326 are primarily derived from
\n[CCITT-Q.921], with the addition of the selective retransmission
\nprocedures from [ISO-4335] and additional procedures specific to
\nthe CDPD Network environment.<\/p>\n

Appendix 403\u2013B, page 403\u201367 provides a comparison of MDLP to
\nHDLC classes of procedures while Appendix 403\u2013C, page 403\u201368
\nprovides a detailed comparison of MDLP and LAPD. Examples of how
\nthe SREJ mechanism should be used is provided in Appendix 403\u2013D,
\npage 403\u201370.<\/p>\n

1. The Mobile Data Base Station (MDBS) functions primarily as a
\ndata link relay between an MD-IS and M-ESs. In certain cases, the
\nMDBS may also originate MDLP frames destined for M-ESs, primarily
\nfor radio resource management (see Part 405). The MDBS is never the
