Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

This Part defines the services needed for supporting
\nauthentication of a Mobile End System (M-ES) by the Cellular
\nDigital Packet Data (CDPD) Network. This Part specifies the data
\ncommunication protocols to be used by the home MD-IS to verify the
\nM-ES's credentials. This Part does not directly impact CDPD
\nsubscribers or M-ES manufacturers.<\/p>\n

This Part assumes that the reader is familiar with CDPD in
\ngeneral, as presented in [IS-732- 100]. [IS-732-100] provides a
\ncomprehensive glossary of CDPD terms.<\/p>\n

This Part supports authentication of an M-ES Network Entity
\nIdentifier (NEI) by the CDPD Network. Serving MD-IS, home MD-IS and
\nthe Authentication Server participate in the authentication of a
\nM-ES NEI. The authentication procedures involve verification of the
\nAuthentication Sequence Number (ASN) and assignment of the
\nAuthentication Random Number (ARN). These procedures and protocols
\nare described in [IS-732-406].<\/p>\n

Authentication of an M-ES by the CDPD Network involves the
\nfollowing steps:<\/p>\n

a. Serving MD-IS and the M-ES exchange secret keys to be used
\nfor encryption and decryption of data transmitted across the
\nairlink<\/p>\n

b. Serving MD-IS and the M-ES encrypt and decrypt data
\ntransmitted across the airlink<\/p>\n

c. M-ES presents its credentiais (one or more[NEI, ASN, ARN]
\ntriplet) to the serving MD-IS<\/p>\n

d. Serving MD-IS forwards M-ES's credentials to the home
\nMD-IS<\/p>\n

e. Home MD-IS verifies correctness of the credentials through a
\nverification request to the Authentication Server<\/p>\n

f. The Authentication Server validates or rejects the
\ncredentials and optionally generates new credentials for future use
\nand communicates the results to the home MD-IS<\/p>\n

g. The home MD-IS then forwards the Authentication Results to
\nthe serving MD-IS<\/p>\n

h. The serving MD-IS then forwards the Authentication Results to
\nthe M-ES.<\/p>\n

This Part focuses on steps (e) and (f) of the M-ES
\nauthentication process. Steps (a) to (c) and step (h) are defined
\nin [IS-732-406] and [IS-732-507]. Steps (d) and (g) are defined in
\n[IS-732-501].<\/p>\n

When a CDPD NEI Authentication Service User (CNA-SU)1<\/sup>
\nis in a different open system from a CDPD NEI Authentication Server
\n(CNA-SP)2<\/sup> with which it is interacting, these
\ninteractions are supported by the CDPD NEI Authentication Protocol
\n(CNA-P), which is an OSI application layer protocol.<\/p>\n

When the NEI Authentication Server is part of a home MD-IS, use
\nof the protocol specified in this Part is not required. Use of this
\nprotocol is only required if the home MD-IS and the Authentication
\nServer are in different open systems and the service provider
\ndesires an open interface (that is compliant with this Part)
\nbetween these open systems.<\/p>\n

Depending on the security policy of a service provider, in
\naddition to authentication services, none, part or all of access
\ncontrol policies can be implemented in the Authentication Server.
\nAlthough this part only focuses on Authentication Services, it does
\nnot preclude implementation of access control in the Authentication
\nServer.<\/p>\n
